Child bike seat.

Perhaps the most widespread option. It can be front, rear or frame mounted. It is advisable for babies who are able to hold their head up (a little younger than one year old). Depending on their height, a bike seat could be used up until 3 to 4 years old.

Advantages

  • Lightweight.
  • Easy to mount and unmount.
  • Offers more interaction with the biking parent and a better view. especially the front and  frame mounted seats.

Disadvantages

  • Slight imbalance to inexperienced cyclists.
  • It can interfere with the parents’ legs or arms. Especially front and frame mounted seats.
  • In case of crash, back seats offer less chance to protect the child.

Bicycle trailer.

A pull-behind bike trailer usually rides close to the ground. It can accommodate multiple children. Some models offer protection against bad weather. Those are oriented to kids aged at least 1 year old. Some trailers can be detached and used as a stroller.

Tandem trailer.

It is intended for kids who can pedal (and help their parents with the weight!). Just like the bike trailer, it can be detached when not in use.

Advantages

  • It can be detached
  • Kids continue to go further into the biking world, still supervised by an adult

Disadvantages

  • It is harder to drive during rush hour and or  in busy roads

Other options, for older kids, include:

Tandem coupling / tow bar

It attaches a kid’s bike to an adult’s bike, on certain occasions when needed. It can attach the wheels together, or the second bike to the seat post of the first bike. It is a cheap option, but can be somewhat wobbly. Therefore, it is better for kids who can cycle well enough. For us this is not the preferred option to bike with kids.

Which is a trailer attached to the back of the bicycle, that allows the kid (or cheeky adult) to ride standing up.
